a lot of ponies burned down the garden over the years
often due to the animals
I want to mention that where I live in Europe the fiddle saying does not exist and the popular legend speaks about a lyre to start with. I’m inclined to believe that the only reason the fiddle version exists in English is because the word sounds funnier, and because of its confusion/association with other fiddle-related sayings. (“playing second fiddle” etc.)
That’s actually what I was talking about, I just read about that somewhere.
It’s impossible he played a fiddle. The earliest known depiction of a stringed instrument played with a bow in Roman artifacts dates to more than 800 years after Nero’s death. Violins/fiddles as we know them today wouldn’t exist for almost 700 years after that. But plucked lyres existed in Greek sources that pre-dated Nero’s birth by more than 2400 years.
It happened during, but was not necessarily caused by, their play date.
All the better.
Celestia plays the fiddle while Canterlot burns.
Y’know, some sources state that Nero actually played the lyre. (Like Lyra!)
When you’ve seen one burning at the stake, you’ve seen them all.
