It used to be fairly common in some countries, such as England.
Anyway, my own headcanon is that Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns could board students, but they could also go home at the end of the day most days. While Twilight would go home most days, she’d also stay overnight sometimes to do more studying or work on a project. I also look at “momlestia” pics as Celestia being an honorary beloved aunt to Twily, rather than a surrogate mother.
A mother only gets to see her daughter on the weekends? Horrible! Truly terrible! I mean I get that Celestia is trying to get the most out of Twilight (something a real honest to god teacher would do when they see a gifted student), but at the end of the school day Twilight would go home and see her mother and father.
I used to always like coming home after a long day of school to be greeted by my mother or father and hear them say “How was your day at school?” Twilight too would probably like this as well I would think.
I believe that the fanon is that Celestia’s school is a boarding school and that the princess had taken it upon herself to take care of Twilight during the periods that she was there.
Velvet would have had her on weekends.
But, yeah… I get what you mean.
Except she’s NOT her mother. Sad to see Velvet gets brushed off so much.
