Most of the time “being yourself” gets you nowhere and might even set you back, as many people dislike what they consider unusual behavior, and will do whatever they can to get rid of it, including socially acceptable forms of psychological torture such as isolation and humiliation. So the best strategy is to NEVER be yourself in public, just be what everyone else expects of you, because having a personality is considered a great sin

I’ve been there. I feel your pain.

Lyra and Bon Bon always have the best comics.  
So many times I’ve made a lot of friends, or maybe just a few, and then I do something to lose them all. And they act like it’s the last straw, or something.
 
More than anything, I just wish they’d talk to me about how I am upsetting them, rather than wait months, leading me on thinking we’re the best of friends, and then have them all group together and banish me.
 
It keeps happening. I’m only gonna learn how to act like a normal person and not the psycho arsehole that I seem to be, if I am told.

Such insultingly thoughtless advice.

“Normal” is a word made up to make conformity seem like a good thing. It’s through being different that we are strong. It’s an old way of thinking about it, but different skills and ways of thinking make for a strong group.
