Luna is the more popular of the two but she is pretty commonly interpreted as her sisters inferior. It’s not at all unusal for her to be interpreted as being weaker magically, and the person I was originally replying to had suggested that Celestia has all the authority and responsibility and Luna has none.

Vice-principal is a title that is inferior to principal, and making Luna inferior to her sister in the human world suggest that she is inferior in Equestria as well.

Please rewatch the first episode. It wasn’t about recognition or power or whatever, it was about everyone going sleep in the night and her being lonely.
The prologue from the first episode, which leaves a lot to the imagination since it’s only a minute and thirty seconds long, suggest that their subjects didn’t appreciate Luna’s work as much as Celestia’s, and that that was the cause of Luna’s envy.
The reason I’m even willing to argue this is because I think that Luna being inferior is a valid interpretation of her character. I just feel that Celestia and Luna are more compelling characters as equals than not.

It’s mostly fanon that makes Luna out to be inferior, but the show is also guilty of it what with making her the vice-principal in “Equestria Girls.”

There really aren’t any hints of anything like that going on in the show. Celestia handles the duties of the day while Luna handles the matters of the night.
Considering Celestia run everything alone for 1000 years it’s no surprise Luna isn’t strong-arming into every role Celestia has.
I didn’t mean to imply that Luna’s life is terrible, I just don’t like the idea that Celestia has all the power and Luna is just a figurehead. Making Luna out to be inferior is a pet-peeve of mine.

No, Celestia is now the one who everyone either forgets exists or assumes has no say in how her country is governed while Luna is now the one who is adored by all and assumed to be superior to her sister in every way.
…Celestia should be happy.

I just think it’s more hilarious that Celestia would be the one to freak the fuck out at possibly of being Luna.
