I dunno. I would say Tartakovsky and McCracken, and Faust in turn, were more influenced by the flat, rigid style of UPA more than anime. Know what I mean?  
Also, I don’t mind when show like Teen Titans mimic the style and sensibility of anime. When a show like Steven Universe just makes countless anime references, it just feels cheap.

Or Teen Titans and Totally Spies!. Plus, FiM’s genetic predecessors, including programs by Tartakovsky, Hartman, McCracken, et cetera, have all been largely influenced by Japanese animation, but still maintains Western styles of story and characterization and shit. :3
