The idea was that a sexual act some people see as obscene is legal in some states while a human right is legal in less states.

I think part of the reason this is the case is that people who oppose both things don’t tend to make such a big stink about bestiality because it’s not nearly as common as homosexuality. And, yes, gay marriage and bestiality are in different ballparks, but both are still considered sodomy. Since so many people in America are gay, and so fewer people are zoophiles, gay marriage is the one that gets more attention and thus is more opposed.
