Yeah. It would have been cool to see them having different generations with different technology. One good example is the Equestria Girls music video Friendship Through the Ages. In that Video Twilight represented Victorian ages with her piano and outfit. Fluttershy seemed to represent sometime in the 19th century I think. Rarity did the 60s, with obvious Beetles inspiration. Rainbow Dash seemed to represent the 90s. Not sure what era Applejack was emulating since country music has been around so long with little change. But it could be anywhere from early to mid 20th century. And Pinkie represented the 80s. And it was probably the best part of the video.

I don’t know if I really agree with you there. Sure, the original “Friends” animated continuity was just a fantasy show that happened to be released in the 80s, but like @Background Pony #255F alluded to, “Tales” was as contemporary a series as MLP has ever had. Tales did have the fat cell phones you mention. The resident aspiring singer wanted to be a rockstar that looked like this. They went to roller rinks and had aerobics classes…if anything, I would see the argument that it was way too contemporary; It was pretty much just late 80’s early 90’s suburbia, but with ponies.

I kinda hyper-fixed on that one point, but that’s just cause the rest of the stuff is YMMV and not stuff that I have a particular priority in for MLP. For what it’s worth, Pre-unification Maretime Bay seemed to have a lower level of tech, and I do agree that it probably would’ve been more interesting if the three big locations had kept their varying levels of technological advancement.

I’m talking something that emulates 80s fashion and technological level. Machines in G4 were primitive, and often magic based. Like Twilight’s portal machine. The most advanced thing seemed to be the arcade machine Button Mash was playing. And even that was probably magic based. And then in G5 they have automobiles, smart phones, laptop computers internet, their own versions of social media and youtube. They completely passed over a golden opportunity to emulate earlier technology, fashion styles, and generations. G4 and G5 have worn 80s style clothes a few times. But they never actually lived in a generation that reflects it in the shows. When G1 came out, it was the 80s. But the show was a product of it’s time, and was more based on pony adventures than how the 80s was as a statement in itself. The brilliance of G4 was they had some modernity, but didn’t have an over-reliance on technology. (Except in the Pony Life side series) G5 is currently so modern, that it’s just not interesting to me. Not saying that it’s not good. It just doesn’t have the charm G4 did because of the quantum leap it took. I’d find it hilarious if things like their cell phones were the huge 80s style ones, and they referenced gags of the 80s. What made the greatest cartoons great was satire and generational pop culture. While G4 was low on both of these, they added in cameos of very unexpected characters, and even some pony versions of celebrities like Weird Al. G5 as far as I know, doesn’t have any of that.

They kind of did, specifically with the Dreamlands pop girl earth pony band from the Bridlewoodstock special. Their style definitely screams ’80s, and you can tell from when we first see them that they felt like they were long since past their prime.

Ya know, with G5 basically taking place in a 21st century equivalent Equestria, it’s a shame they didn’t try an 80s style generation. Characters like Surf and Turf would fit right in
