Yeh, immortality is a concern, for example. Or magical might. Or the association with royalty. In a world where every pony suddenly wants to become an alicorn and thinks about claiming the throne, there will be turmoil and gossip on what else the centuries-old alicorn government could be hiding from commoners, and given that Twilight is a very young ruler, she may not be able to cope with this. Maybe because of such a situation Opaline arose, and it was decided to turn off the magic, and only create temporary alicorns, which is Sunny. But I’m getting ahead of myself lol
Interesting backstory idea. Seems a bit selfish though to deny essentially everyone alicornhood, unless of course there’s some dark price to pay or something.
