Also, I feel somewhat more validated in pre-judging this movie as shit now. Before, I at least gave them the benefit of the doubt that the wings and ears were only for the toys. Now I see that that’s not the case. So yeah, even what little hope I held out for this movie not turning into shit appears to be gone.

OK, what is this shit? They turn anthro during the movie?

There’s a hint there’s more than just “human teenage high school drama”. The film teaser talks of “fate of both worlds”.
 
Yes, we’re not talking deep, high intellectual stuff like Blade Runner or Memento, but this is more than just Hasbro’s grab to start a new toy line. The show runners could have just ran with a silly plotline and get their paycheck, but they actually tried to do something with it, from all signs and hints.

I have a bit of an idea of what might be going on.

But it does matter, because it doesn’t make any sense. The other girls are not the friends as Twilight knows them, just human counterparts. For them to gain the characteristics of their Ponyville counterparts just makes no sense, especially since they’re the only one who have changed.

That’s the thing - the trailer has them all human (save for skin color) - there’s no horns, wings, or tails. If anything the only oddity will be Spike the talking dog. One scene plays towards this idea with the fake ears but that’s it. So this shot is either an early production still or there’s something in the movie where they don these for that purpose (or they get transformed into them? that seems really a lame twist)

I’m curious, why would the other girls gain pony characteristics? Twilight’s the only one truly from Equestria; the others are native to the human world.

When it comes to EqG, It’s more about the journey and less about the destination.

Interesting that they have wings/ears while still otherwise in the “loose” style of the trailer. There’s that one scene in the trailer where they are sporting fake pony ears, so I wonder if that leads to this.
