This is definitely one of the most poignant and believable headcanoned backstories I’ve read. Also, I am so behind the idea of Shining Armor and Big Macintosh being pals.

Reinstating the “gay” tag. It’s not overly relevant, but it was heavily implied that Big Mac was in love with his roommate.

Oh.
It was always my headcanon that Big Mac at least attended college at some point and is the only member of the four apples to have done so so far. Granny Smith would have just been a baker and housewife, and Applejack never went to college so she can stay at the farm. Apple Bloom could go anywhere but I suspect she will at some point.

Say what you want about /mlp/, but sometimes in random anonymous posts made entirely of greentext they can write better stories than people on FiMfiction in their mega epic +100k word novels.
