I read it as Luna willingly became Nightmare Moon’s host.

Luna Willingly Transformed into Nightmare moon. She revealed this in the previous comic.

That’s true, and without having seen all of #7 yet, I don’t know how the rest of the book is treating canon here (#6 implied Luna had a secret).
 
It could be that Luna transformed to NMM, gave birth to the nightmare spirits (hundreds of years of banishment can do that), and then when the Mane 6 defeated NMM and transformed her back, the nightmare spirits remained. Thus they can only possess, but not transform, Rarity. But again, only reading between the lines here without full knowledge of #7.

That might be more tragic, but it won’t be very acurate to the show. The show strongly implied that nightmere moon saw herself as luna, and when she was defeated, Celsetia had to ask Luna to forsake her grudge following by Luna asking for forgivness.

Consider that if Luna was only possessed and not transformed, imagine what emotional pain it had to be for Celestia to banish her to the moon.
 
It’s one thing if your sister was transformed and likely lost forever, it’s far more tragic if it was possession and that she had to be banished, her real persona trapped within.

So if we are going by the comic as canon, it seems Luna was indeed possessed by Nightmare Moon.
