You gotta put thought into the color of the character’s clothing too. Like, when I did Luna in the Nightmare Dress Monster I gave her very light skin because dark skin would have clashed really badly with the bright pink and magenta of the clothes. That said, it’s actually a little too light. If I had done something more similar to Luna-Afterdark I bet it would have looked a lot better :D
Actually, it’s why I think Cozy Glow has among the best humanized designs out of any character. Especially this one. They kept her coat color for her dress, kept her hair color, gave her white skin similar to her coat, and then matched the bow to her skin color. It makes for a really nice two-tone color scheme :D
You gotta just not overdesign it. Like, another great design is this one of Zecora. Again, I love how they incorporated her coat into her outfit, even incorporating a “stripe” motif into it without having actual stripes in it.

You make an interesting point. Hard to get tanned if you’re always living in the dark. I guess she could use tanning cream? But then again, in a world of magic, skin-tones are probably more easily augmented.

I think so too! I can just never decide if she looks better with dark skin, or with pale skin. To me, dark skin works better with her dark coat and contrasts Princess Celestia who I like to think has tanned white skin, but her having pale skin makes more sense since she’s the princess of the night who doesn’t get sunlight XD
