I read about that shape a few days ago. My immediate thought was “if you could create textures in that shape, then textures in video games would never tile visibly again”. Perhaps someone will do that experiment soon?
Well, as long as the textures are flat. This tiling depends on a certain kind of self-similarity; it’s assembled into larger and larger units that all tile in aperiodic way. You really need Euclidean geometry for that.
