So the cover from #6 when it looked like the crystals were talking to Sunny is true. It doesn’t sound like a message from the past, but it’s possible that the Mane 5 learned enough to believe they can confront Discord and ultimately help him. And as we have seen in the RI cover of # 9, it was at this moment that they were put into the test that Discord had created.
We know from the #10 cover that the Mane 5 successfully pass the test, gaining Discord’s trust. Possibly Discord had wanted to see if their friendship and reciprocity is strong. Perhaps he planted the story of his allegedly evil mirror in their consciousness, to see if they understood forgiveness, reconciliation and determination.
There are many indications that Discord may disappear in #10 when the arc ends, but the Mane 5 will remember him and his message. Because they know they had been tested to earn the right to represent the legacy left by the previous generation, the Mane 6.

I assume that could be the explanation, if Hitch really isn’t meant to have any connection to Fluttershy. I feel like in his case they should explain it, though. People can look past a unique, supernatural ability in a kid’s show, but people will have questions if that unique ability pops up on another character in the sequel/reboot-sequel.

If they are so related, then that they as opposed to all their other relations means it was due to their own work and merits as opposed to bloodline.

Agreed.
If they have to be related to someone, I’d go with Sunny and Argyle as Star Tracker’s (there’s family resemblance) as an otherwise insignificant character working to protect Twilight’s legacy would be a worthy accomplishment that preserves that of his descendants as it was because of their work as opposed to blood/fate, and Izzy as Sombra’s (resemblance to his love interest) as it would make her accomplishments meaningful as his legacy was an obstacle she overcame proving her agency.

It’s also unexplained how Fluttershy’s got that power despite never interacting with animals prior to her cutie mark and not being pegasus magic. Maybe Hitch didn’t get them from anyone, maybe he and Fluttershy got them due to the same external circumstances (maybe such powers are the “logical” magical consequence of such kindness they are worthy bearers of the Element).

I was looking for that image to make my point before omg, why couldn’t I find it–
Hmm, that could be the case. It’s still possible that the elements are introduced, giving that picture you shared, but they’re definitely taking their time introducing them if they will.
I didn’t get that in Simple Ways Applejack was being vain, more like she wanted Rarity to see how silly she looked by pretending to be something she’s not. Though I can agree with the other episode comparisons–even though I remember others saying that Applejack was out of character in those–
And I can agree that both Hitch and Applejack are proud ponies. Their pride is similar in the sense that they’re both stubborn, independent work-a-holics. I think Hitch is more of a show-off and braggart, though.
I don’t think Fluttershy not having an ego means that Hitch can’t be her sucessor, though. Zipp is not a hothead nor does she want recognition for her skills, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t stand-in for Rainbow Dash. Sunny never needed to learn the value of friendship, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t stand-in for Twilight. But I can understand your point that, in terms of roles, Hitch is more in line with Applejack as a dependable pony who tries to keep the group in check with rationality.
If Hitch is not meant to be Fluttershy’s descendant though, I wonder where did he get the powers from. She’s the only other pony who could communicate with animals, and Hitch is now the only earth pony who can do so.

It grossly cheapens G5 if you attach the characters too strictly to the legacy of the previous characters. It’s tacky and uncreative.
Not that they won’t do exactly that, just that they absolutely shouldn’t and I won’t be doing it in RevEq. Yes that is still a thing. No I won’t remind anyone what it stands for.

Not sure if reliable, but it does line up with Hitch being Kindness. Sunny is Hope, which is a version of Pinkie’s Element despite Sunny being Twilight’s expy and Izzy Pinkie’s.
Apparently they are (meant to be) complex enough that the traits that make them similar to X character still leave them different enough to fit Y Element instead.
Hitch is more the successor to Applejack than Fluttershy, in the eyes of the narrative at least, as magic powers are less important/more secondary to G5 than G4 (at least as far as what the narrative usually deals with. Thus what makes him AJ’s successor, personality and role, take narrative precedence over what make him Fluttershy’s, powers and Element. I’d say he’s 75% Applejack’s successor and 25% Fluttershy’s in terms of screentime spent focusing on those attributes. (If he were introduced as an Element it would likely be reversed, but that’s not the direction the series went.)
Also:
  1. Applejack still has a bigger ego and more prone to pridefulness than Fluttershy. Fluttershy count stand being the center of attention in a fashion show nor had any vanity but “Simple Ways” was capable of such in the rare moment she wanted. And “Somepony to Watch Over Me” and “Applejack’s ‘Day’ Off” show AJ is more prone to obsessiveness/getting out of hand than Fluttershy. So Hitch is still a closer fit.
  2. I’m not feeling the Hitch being Fluttershy’ descendant theory. All current evidence is against Fluttershy having the sort of relationship that would create descendants and “Flutter Brutter” established her animal powers were no hereditary. There’s also no evidence of the prior Elements bearers being ancestors of the Mane Six. It seems more likely whatever made them destined/worthy Element bearers was independent of their bloodline.
Fun fact, they’re all related actually. This isn’t a theory, it’s true.
Let’s subtract same blood marriages and such. Years and years of family through marriage, new biological branches made from both families, mixed in with more families, and rinse and repeat for years.
This means that over millenniums that every single character in MLP (of the same species at least such as pony or dragon, etc.) is some form of distant cousin at least.
So in a way Hitch is indeed related to Fluttershy, but not the way you think.

I get the Applejack comparisons–I think in general Hitch was meant to stand in for both Fluttershy and Applejack, as early, EARLY leaks and concepts of G5 had people at Hasbro say/show that they were thinking of getting rid of Applejack, plus Imalou saying that Applejack and Twilight were gonna be childhood friends in one of these early concepts. (It’s clear that’s where Hitch and Sunny being childhood friends comes from.)
But what I’m wondering is…if he’s not meant to suceed Fluttershy, WHY does he have her powers? Powers that nopony else has? That’s a pretty direct link, it almost makes the theory of him being a descendant of Fluttershy seem practically canon. It’s much more direct than Hitch and Applejack’s tie-ins with each other. (Hitch and Applejack also have differences in personality too. Hitch has a big ego, Applejack is humble. Hitch preens over his appearance at times, Applejack doesn’t give a damn about how she looks. Applejack is more down-to-earth as a pillar of stability and order than Hitch, he can be a bit obsessive in that regard)
If he wasn’t meant to suceed Fluttershy, then they didn’t have to make him have her same ability with animals.
If he really is meant to stand-in for only Applejack now though, and Misty is meant to stand-in for Fluttershy, then I think that’s an oversight from the writers. It’s too late in G5 to make a change like that. It has the same vibe as Zipp becoming a detective and using similar methods to Hitch–it’s like the writers are just giving his traits to other characters without much reason.

He’s Applejacks personality (him laking shyness invalidates being a straight version of Fluttershy) and role in the group. He just swaps out AJ’s Element and powers for Fluttershy’s. It possible to have the traits to bear the Element of X but otherwise have very different a character traits.
Besides it seems Misty has taken Fluttershy’s niche as the shy one.

Don’t confuse his powers/actions with his personality/character. His role as the pillar of stability/order in this case is a better fit for AJ’s role despite using Fluttershy’s means.

Episode 5 of Make Your Mark has the most Fluttershy comparisons with Hitch yet. Kindly talking to critters, worrying over them when they get overwhelmed in the community garden, even getting a critter corner in the Brighthouse that’s either meant to go along with Fluttershy’s animal sanctuary, or all the pets she had at her cottage. It doesn’t seem to me like they’re switching gears.

On the ig of mlp for Sunny they have: “she stands up for her friends and loves learning what makes each one different” fitting the magic element
Zipp has: “once you get past her sarcastic exterior and get to know her, you have a loyal friend for life” well thats obvious xD
Pipp has: “she uses her public platform for good and to help her friends sparkle to their potential” with “best pal traits: charismatic, confident, generous”
Izzy has: “you’ll never be done when she’s around, she’s a true friend who will always make you smile” so being laughter
And Hitch having: “his dedication to ‘protect and serve’ means he will always keep you safe” with “best pal traits: dedicated, responsible, helpful” hinting more at Jpplejack than Fluttershy, AJ was always ready to help, was responsible and the stubbornness could be dedication :v
Even tho they didnt really show much of these traits (when was Zipp being loyal??), this would fit the most. But I think they will change the elements if we get them, something like generosity was beauty for Mistmane
And Misty drawing herself a butterfly cm? wink wink
With Sprout being in like.. what one episode? Two? Just cleaning stuff.. doesnt feel like he will be a major character :v that might change tho but doubt it

Sunny like Twilight to spread friendship
Hitch like Applejack is the honest friend
Izzy like Pinkie being so joyful
Zipp like Rainbow Dash that not afraid of anything
Pipp like Rarity love all the fashion thing
Sprout like Fluttershy scared of anything
I actually like to believe that Sprout learned to be honest from Maretime Bay, that he would be the new Applejack. I know it sounds far-fetch, but Sprout in the movie technically never lied, he just “knew” what everyone else “knew”. In the game he learns that lying isn’t the answer.
And another thing is this; not all the Young Six were their elements until they learned to trust each other.
For example; Pipp hasn’t really shown signs of generosity, just been nice and respectful. Zipp doesn’t really show loyalty so much as she just is the same as pipp, just a good friend. Izzy hasn’t exactly shown what it’s like to spread laughter (intentionally) yet. She just sort of is funny as a character trait.
Sunny has been on the magic and friendship thing since she was a filly, so that definitely checks out there, but that’s about it.

Wouldn’t quite make sense, if they’re going by their skills, then Hitch got that animal vibe going on. It’s been shown in; movie, episodes, mini cartoons, and the comics.
