Description
Wingfire (aka “Fireshy”) is an autistic pegasus. He has a seemingly magical connection with animals and nature. One of the more durable ponies, Wingfire is fairly impervious to sharp objects and strong smells. He can hug porcupines and skunks with little problem – and be squeezed by a bear. He can tame some of the biggest and most dangerous animals. He has great survival skills, able to find food and water in some barren wastelands.
Unfortunately, when it comes to people, Wingfire is often timid and afraid of conflict. In the beginning, Wingfire is usually afraid of meeting new people. Friendsville is a place where he knows practically everyone – except for those just passing through. Even so, he likes to spend most of his time in his house or inside the woods.
Wingfire runs an animal sanctuary on his own property, along with an animal clinic. He is a great animal doctor. In addition, he loves gardening and living off the land. He has many acres of forest, which he carefully manages in order to bring out the best in nature. Wingfire believes harmony with nature is not letting nature run wild – but nurturing it so that it will nurture you.
Wingfire is shy by nature. He also had to run away from abusive parents and a dangerous neighborhood. He comes from Foalstown, a small port city surrounded by Equopolis. This place is infamous for organized crime. Unfortunately, the rulers do not realize this. They’re accustomed to thinking their subjects generally get along. Unfortunately, their ignorance makes Wingfire think the rulers are selfish and uncaring, and he would be terrified to meet them.
As part of his traumatic childhood, Wingfire is afraid of heights – despite being a pegasus. When he was little, he was a weak flier. But no one appreciated that he needed time to grow. One day, an abusive gym teacher dropped him from high in the sky to force him to fly. He just barely broke his fall.
Wingfire doesn’t know it, but he has the tools now to become a strong flier. Unfortunately, he’s afraid to try. Every time he flies, he imagines himself falling to his death.
Wingfire is normally cautious about getting into fights. He loves animals so much that he rarely eats meat. He helps animals get along with one another, including some predators and prey animals. Wingfire is a peaceful and kindhearted spirit who just wants you to love him and care about him.
At first, Wingfire is usually so shy of conflict that he’s easily pushed around. He is terrified of rejection, partially because he was often bullied as a child. However, when persistently rejected or bullied, he may occasionally explode. He eventually learns how to be strong without becoming a bully himself.
Wingfire has a special stare (and voice) that can intimidate much bigger and stronger animals. Occasionally, he’s been able to scare bullies with this tactic. As he later learns, fear responses are psychological – and oftentimes make no sense. That’s the way phobias work.
Because he’s mainly impervious to strong smells, Wingfire sometimes smells like a skunk without realizing it. This has sometimes protected him from getting pushed around, without him necessarily realizing this. His two favorite pets are a porcupine named Cuddlethorn and a skunk named Pungent Pillow.
