I'm pretty sure that the whole point of setting G5 so far in the future that G4 has passed from history into myth (an not even commonly known, but _obscure_ myth), was so that they can pick and choose very carefully which — if any — bits of G4 lore they want to bring forward. Anything they _don't_ want to continue can easily be explained by pointing to the enormous amount of time passed and the many, many unknown events, both magical and mundane, that must have happened in that time to "change the rules", as it were.
Given the crazy amount of "schizo tech" that G4 accrued over its 9 seasons, whenever the writers couldn't be arsed to come up with a medieval solution and lazily plopped a modern machine in there (or an entirepost-industrialised city), the G5 creators could easily have set an Equestria with this tech level a mere century or two after G4. The fact that they _didn't_ suggests to me that they want G5 to be _about the G5 world and ponies_ and not about G4 and what happened to it.
There will _probably_ be occasional stories involving G4 Equestria, and possibly even G4 ponies, _if and when_ it would make a good story for the G5 characters — but at this point I do not expect the series to devote much time to explaining how G4 turned into G5. I fear that anyone who goes into the series expecting to receive those answers is only setting themselves up for disappointment.
