I’ve seen a fanfic that shows the dark side of Harmony and yes as that sentient entity but anyway.
I suspect many reasons. Either A) all along, they’ve used Harmony as a weapon but Twilight stirred Harmony into a force for good, thereby ruining their plans for conquest. B) They are aware the tree is destroyed but pretty much same as A. C) They had good intentions at first but over time saw Friendship as power (looking at you Ahuizotl and Cozy).
Overall, I don’t want to see them reformed if that’s what you’re implying.

I would say I wanted Grogar or the trio, but I’m okay with the Knights. Still feels bland since they are new original characters but the setting in the story looks promising.
Pencils is very determined to leave lasting traces in the MLP G4 after him, which is why we see such richness of detail and well-thought-out background in Canterlot, that it partly put the ponies in the shadows on the comic book pages. In facts; I think we’ve never seen Canterlot as great as in his cartoon work - only surpassed by the artist Plainoasis who has created amazing scenery images of Canterlot in Deviantart / Derpibooru. Not surprisingly, Pencils, who has a Finnish background, had taken inspiration from Europe. As the FiM comics are about to end, it is no wonder that he should do his best in what may be his latest work.
It is not possible to say whether Rainbow had told her friends about Cunebula who could give important clues as to who “the knights of Harmony” are, and why they seemed to dislike the ponies so much that they wanted to attack Equestria. Also, the Harmony tree is not in Canterlot, it is in the Everfree that could be the first attack target for the “knights” who may be surprised if they find out that the tree is no more. Then we should see if Whitley has followed the lore from S9. Because if not, the IDW canon is no longer based on the show`s canon. Thus he MUST do it.
There are many indications that the attacking Cunebulans will not use magical power, but magical knowledge that had been preserved and improvised for a very long time. Thus, the ponies may get into trouble if they discover that their magic is not refined enough, and even if Discord should help, it may not be enough. When the “princess” used her magic, she uses a medium as her staff to manipulate the mass of a living individual - this can be interpreted as a proof of knowledge of unknown spells rather than magical power. But what makes the “knights” very dangerous is the possibility that the element trees for a long time had a destructive effect on values these were meant to strengthen, and this may have distorted them far beyond the track. If their tree has distorted them into perverted representatives of their elements, they can become erratic, even for Discord. Only one tree was active, the one in Cunebula.
It is possible that only the Harmony can stop the “knights”, as she can purge them of the harmful effects of the element tree that seemed to have malfunctioned. But before this happens, Twilight and her older and new friends must fight a hard battle to stop a powerful group that may have gone insane.
To be fair, Discord is kind of a walking plot device. It’s kinda of hard to have him in a battle and not have the opposition utilize some sort of McGuffin or gimmick to keep him form just yeeting everyone
And even if THEY did, then EVERY villain would potentially start doing it too, which would lead back to Discord being useless.

Ah yeah, no, i don’t hate Discord for season 9, his characterization is horrible in S9 for the twist? yes. Discord like a concept is irredeemable and should die for that? no, i really love Discord as a character, if isn’t for him and the draconequus, i would have leave the fandom since so much time, i just tired for not see more of his redeption arc that actually gives a lot to be a character with conflicts and dilemmas.
And the reason why i dislike a lot Discord losing his powers is because it’s very cheap, with Tirek works so much for being the first time but the rest only were excuses to don’t be creative. Discord is very creative, he needs very creative enemies or scenatios to fight. I mean, if Discord can gets sick and don’t solves in one snap because he needs conflict in his life, then why not explore another types of weakness besides of “he’s useless without his powers”?

No, i don’t want to see Discord die, i just i know he will not defeat the knights because i know mane 6 plus the other species 6 will defeat them at the end. I only want to see one scenario where Discord don’t lose his powers to be defeated because seriously, that only was epic with Tirek but the rest feels so lame.
If Ceridwen can control matter, i have the hope the knights together are like a not so powerful draconequus in power theme, so, they defeating Discord in combat would be actually nice to see or at least he have the same participation as Siege of Crystal Empire and Transformers/MLP, he uses tricks but not all his power because he’s a chaotic creature that needs conflict in his existence.
i want to pray that if Discord is defeated by the knights of harmony, let it be in combat, nothing about suppress powers, that one of them could corner him with his abilities or better, the 6 had to unite to defeat him.

Watch him be completely useless somehow, because the writers have no idea what to do with a character who can do basically anything with a snap of his fingers.
