Water Lily has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and tends to feel the need to perform tasks in threes, especially things like opening/closing doors, locking things, dipping hooves into the water, putting down eating utensils, etc. If she does not complete these rituals, Lily feels extreme anxiety and can have panic attacks, her thoughts tending to consume her until she can finish the task she needs to. Her swim students don’t always understand it, but she does her best to normalize it with them since most young ponies haven’t seen behavior like hers before.
