Here’s Cranky Doodle Donkey’s true love Matilda back when she was a young jenny. I can see why he fell head over hooves for her. Matilda was a very beautiful jenny, perhaps the most beautiful jenny ever. Even after she aged, her beauty remained.
Just like Cranky Doodle, this is perhaps the very first time anybody attempted to do a vector of young Matilda. And it is just so wrong that we didn’t get to see more young adult jennies throughout the series. If this is what they looked like in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, then we should’ve had more of them. Donkeys in cartoons are almost always portrayed as homely, even with cartoonishly goofy teeth. My Little Pony G4, on the other hand—or hoof—depicted them as either handsome or beautiful like a dream. But that we only got to see them once is just a kick in the face.
And just like with younger Cranky, working on this was a chore with the meager references I could find. The only time we see young adult donkeys, and especially young Cranky and Matilda, was in a brief flashback which didn’t portray them in the pose you see here, so I had to figure it out by going through a collection of screenshots I found and made through videos. Not to mention said flashback was treated like an old 30’s black-and-white film, so the resolution was weak and it was rather tricky to find the outlines for some parts of his body and how thick they were. Since we never got to see younger Matilda in color I couldn’t really tell what the color of the scrunchy in her mane or her scarf are. So I had to guess that they were the same color as her pearl earring she is currently wearing. Once again, this is NOT 100% accurate, but it is the best I could do.
I really wish that there was a leaked model sheet of Matilda and Cranky Doodle in their youth, perhaps then I would redo the vectors correctly.
Now as I mentioned in my journal post, I got to work on Cranky and Matilda back in February. I had to make some occasional tweaks here and there, and I wanted to wait for the right time to upload this. And I got a couple of special donkey vectors coming up. So be prepared for anything.
