My family (parents and brothers) and I use Skype every once in a while. And at my job, we used Skype for meetings until we replaced it with Microsoft Teams just a month or two ago (we still use Skype for Business for instant messaging).

And of course, the presence of Skype. I don’t know anyone who still uses Skype these days. But I know that back in 2011-2013, it was the hottest thing, and lots of meetup-related things were done with it.
You can give yourself a nickname in different servers; that’s similar. Server owners can also do that to members.
I wish Discord would let you change your name for individual people, which I believe Skype did.
Personally, I miss AIM.
