Welp, looks like the ride is officially over (at least for me personally). Time to seek greener pastures elsewhere. Maybe I’ll get back into anime again or something…
 
All good things must come to an end, I suppose. At the end of the day, we were truly lucky to have gotten 9 full years of G4 greatness. I wish you guys the best~<3

Here is a definition of CGI animation just for anypony that wants to dig deeper. Flash by definition is CGI since it uses puppets. The more you know… :)
 
I guess then I like the 2.5D ish CGI as opposed to the 3D kind. I don’t know anymore. Lmao. I guess it just depends on the tool used, the money and time involved, and the skill of the artist that determines “good” cgi.
 
I put good in quotes since even that is up to taste. Some people liked Goblin Slayers CGI for example.

SFM can be fun for fan works, but I doubt anyone really wanted the actual show to be animated with the SFM models.

Fans complaining about the series being CGI yet they are completely okay with the FIM characters being done in Source Filmmaker and G-Mod. Double standards, what’s that?

Yeah that’s what I understand. 3D puppets is traditionally what is considered CGI.

Oh yeah I’m definitely right there with you! I just hope that translates to the Tv show. Right now I think this is just for the movie, but it’s all speculation on my part. MLP:FIM surprised me a multitude of times. I expect the same in G5. ;)

Even with Flash? Because there’s really not much to flash as long as you have the right puppets, right? I mean there are tens of thousands of fanmade vectors and SVG’s

I actually think that CG tends to be much cheaper because 3D models essentially animate themselves between keyframes, even “accessories” like manes and tails provided they’re rigged properly. There’s a lot of asset creation (i.e. modeling, IK rigging) time in the beginning, but the actual animating of scenes takes a tiny fraction of the time it would with Flash. Maybe back in the 00s, CGI was expensive due to how hard it was to get a render-capable computer back then, but not so much today…2D animation needs an awful lot of manpower, even compared to 3D, and labor is a way bigger cost than equipment because it’s recurring rather than incidental and we’re talking relatively skilled labor.

I like the way the characters move in the moments we’ve been teased with so far, but time will indeed tell whether they put that level of effort into the series itself.

They’re not animating the next mainline Transformers show either. I think Hasbro is preparing to phase them out.

Well… Atomic Cartoons worked in Beat Bugs, Mighty Express and the Star Wars Holiday Special (the LEGO one, not that awful one made in the 80s), while Boulder Media worked in Go Jetters! The G5 series’ CGI animation probably will be in the same level as those cartoons.

I agree, I’m one of those people. Still crossing my fingers that whatever animation tool they use for G5 turns out just fine. Let’s wait and see.

As long as the CGI is done well I think it will be fine. I just don’t want the CGI to be like Brave Witches or Goblin Slayer level CGI cause those are examples in my recent viewing experience that are absolutely horrible. The characters look stiff when they use CGI.
 
I hope G5 doesn’t follow that route cause boy it’s going to be painful. If it’s going to be like that they might as well stick to Flash since based on G4 they absolutely nailed it animation wise, so smooth. Sure there were errors, but in opinion it’s the best Flash animation I’ve seen outside of fan works.
 
I wish the animation artists good luck on capturing G4 magic on G5 if not on level, but even better. :D

CGI is infamous for a low detail, jerky product. We’re not talking about Sully’s individually modelled hairs but the spate of CGI series in the early 2000s.  
BUT it has been 20 years. Things are sure to have improved. And it’s not like FIM was photo realistic to begin with. In the end it’s just haters finding something to hate.
