Actually, I do not criticize your design, but the design of the armor that was seen in the show. By wearing a fully enclosed helmet that provides good protection and putting on chainmail-like fabric such as padding that was also used as horse armor, you have given the wearer much better protection than in the show.
 
It seems that it is not metal, but something else that contains “the chainmail” that can be padding armor. There are many different armor options, do you know that silk and paper armor were very effective in ancient China? Horses in our world did not have a shortage of armor for centuries, as “gambeson” that can be used or with chainmail / plate. It is possible to make “padded jacks” from linen, wool and horsehair.
 
What Mercury Haze is wearing, probably padded fabric, provides good protection against blunt force, horse bites for example, and it is possible to attach extra armor such as criniere (which Sombra wears) for neck protection. But then it meant that an attacker had to use powerful weapons to be able to harm her, and since the ponies are hardy animals like our own horses, penetrating weapons and hammer-like weapons are necessary.
 
Which is why Mercury Haze has a halberd, while others can use spears with very robust spearheads as seen in the show. A human can have difficulty against a pony during a tournament by being weak in muscle power and having poorly suited weapons if he is not from the time after 1400, and his armor will not be good enough against the pony that can strike with steel-clad hooves, a horse can crush the head of a human with a single blow. The human must thus go for openings in the armor with stabbing weapons and keep his distance for rapid advance, a griffon warrior would do the same, only with claws and beaks in addition.
 
Do not underestimate a pony in armor, he or she will be a formidable opponent in battle with cold steel. When whole armies fight against each other, there can be a duel between muscle power and steel - with unclear outcomes.

The armor design developed by the artist Equestria-prevails has become popular with many people here lately, which is not really surprising as it has a militaristic appeal and is logically conceived. Never understood why the artists behind the show wanted impractical armor designs that could not be used in a normal world with a closure opening in the breastplate, saddle on the back and vulnerable throat. The openings on the front are very large, on both the shoulders, the throat region and the eyes.
 
Inconvenient in battle, even a trained warhorse from our world will go for these openings with his hooves and teeth. Because when horses fight, they bite each other in the neck region, they fight head to head.
 
In our world, armored horses are best protected at the front to avoid fatal attacks on the chest and throat. It was with this starting point that Equestria-prevails developed his own design with the very characteristic “pig face” full-closed combat helmets that make it possible to give the big eyes some protection.

It’s grey and looks to be made of horizontal rows too large to be the weave of a fabric. If it’s not chainmail, it looks a lot like it.

I don’t believe its chainmail, it’s more likely leather or fabric of some kinda to prevent the armor from chaffing.

I’m looking at the guards’ armor and trying to figure out how the chainmail on their neck and head stays up. I think the chainmail should have a hood that goes over their head, but then it would interfere with their ears, mane, and horns. The more I think about it, the best use of chainmail on a pony would probably be flexible protection for their legs.
