I want to know what the hell was Hasbro thinking when they gave such a dark backstory to such a lighthearted show.

So, this is pretty much “My Little Pony Beyond” and/or “My Little Pony: Legend of Korra”.
 
And, just like in “Batman Beyond” and “Legend of Korra”, the world has gone to shit during the time skip between the original show and now, and the victories the main heroes achieved pre-time skip have been rendered null and void.
 
Now that I think of it, Sunny DOES look like a Ponified Terry McGinnis AND a Ponified Korra.

That’s true from a real world perspective. From writing in fiction, it’s tedious and unimaginative. Remember, real life is a horrible story teller, it’s why when we retell it we omit details, skip over things and put in a narrative where there was none before.
