My headcanon is that she either doesn’t have a family, or has a very messed up family. Either way it contributed to her socially awkward nature today.

Srsly though, why do seemingly none of the pegasi’ family ever come around? We’ve seen Twilight and Rarity’s entire clan, Applejack’s entire family tree, and even Pinkie’s, though I have a nagging suspicion her story was slightly fabricated…

We could try relate her to scootaloo with the flying ability. Maybe she have the same wings problem that get better with time allowing her to fly but prevent her from reaching high speed otherwise than with free fall.

THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.  
I mean it! Think about it! She’s a pegasus who refused to learn to fly properly, which, apparently, if those scenes from flight camp we’ve seen are to be believed, that is kinda like telling your hippie artist parents you want to go to MIT: Madness! It would be logical if FS don’t wanna see her parents to avoid all of that shit.
