The thing is, the Pillars clearly passed the “torch” to the sisters and then the Mane 6 and then the Student Six.  
But the Pillars still got to be included.
 
Luna and Celestia’s cutie marks were literally on the damn tree.  
They should have been included due to being the first users of the Elements after the tree formed.  
The fact they weren’t makes it look like they are essentially pawns tossed away after their “placeholder” role is done.  
So the sisters should have been included not because they were leaders of a country, but they were literally Bearers of the Elements before the Mane 6.

I mean, they had already passed the torch (as far as the Elements of Harmony go) - if they were included like that, once could make a case that the leaders of the other countries should have been as well (since Young Six and all), but I liked the symbolism as it was.

That was to be expected since this was considered to be their endgame.

Like they should have been acknowledged too.

The writers must be thinking “The sisters distracted the trio, see? They aren’t useless : D”, but they missed the problem.  
The huge issue is how Luna and Celestia kept getting taken out or just sidelined. That still happened here, they got taken out TWICE and were sidelined from the final battle(they weren’t even included in the final rainbow laser despite their cutie marks were on the tree and they used the Elements before. No longer being connected to the Elements doesn’t mean the sisters should be tossed aside like that, Twilight/Harmony should have included Luna and Celestia in firing the laser too).

Any damage the villains themselves were responsible for. Blowing up part of Canterlot was the most obvious example.

Well at least we know.  
we do have stored villains for g5 continuation though. So hopefully the writers will manage to breathe and think at the same time and fix this.

They seemed to be going for the quick and easy punishment instead of something more productive like making the villains work and repair the damage they caused.

I know, I’m still disturbed by the petrification, as well as the way this terrifying punishment was celebrated. But then, it seems to me that the ponies became a lot more vindictive and immature starting around season 8. Every-pony seemed to act like the worst versions of themselves. There were good episodes, but seasons 8 and 9 feel jarringly off.

Ugh. Worst plot twist ever! I wanted to see the Mane 6, Young 6 and Pillars duking it out with Grogar!!!

This was such an exciting finale - I especially liked the touch of the other nations coming together to battle the three villains, and then the past, present, and future being needed to defeat them once and for all.

The episode disappointed me.
