I don’t think so… My headcanon is that he was something like Merlin of Equestria. Very smart and talented, but lacked things that are more important in life. He was also Celestia’s student. Twilight would end up being exactly like him if Celestia didn’t send her to Ponyville to learn friendship. Hope we get an episode focusing on him in the future.

We don’t know that for sure. Heck, we still don’t even know why Celestia wanted him back. If it turns out he was Star Swirl, then the whole reformation thing will make a lot more sense than it currently does.

Star Swirl the Bearded has a protégé. He had contact with ponies, he probably had friends, he just didn’t have Twilight’s understanding of friendship.
