I see the plague as a necessary evil to keep her and the forsaken alive. The humans used devastating magic to try and annihilate the trolls after provoking a war with them and they would of done the same to the Sylvanas and her kind without a defense. I would say her people and the humans who shunned there family after the undead regained there free will forced her to find allies elsewhere, first with demons then the horde. She has defiantly done bad things but it was for the survival of the forsaken. But I should say I have played forsaken since vanilla so I am probably really biased to the factions problems and methods of survival.

Yes that has defiantly been a problem with the earlier expansions. The two newest ones have had a lot of lore building quest and cinematics so it defiantly seems they are putting in more effort to keep people from needing to read the books. The next expansion coming out later this year looks like its going to focus on what she has done/caused, hopefully fleshing out in game what she used to be like and how she got to where she is. I don’t see any sort of redemption ark being possible but I look forward to seeing why she did all the things she did over the current expansion.

I mean, the first thing she did when she gained her freedom was to make deals with demons and backstab people who allied with her. That was just WC3:FT. In Vanilla the Forsaken under her command were told to create a new deadlier plague by any means necessary, the Royal Apothecary Society being responsible for any number of terrible acts between Vanilla - WoTLK to her approval. She’s always been super evil and single minded since she got her free will back, she just became cartoonishly evil when her focus changed from getting revenge on Arthas to avoiding death at any cost.

Maybe the problem is Blizzard relying on books instead of making her more likable in the games/cinematics, kind of like if you had to read about how powerful the Death Star was because they never shown it’s power in the movies.

She has defiantly done some horrible things and I can agree with people who view her now as a psychopath. It’s just the way the old god Yogg-Saron has influenced or corrupted her isn’t well know since it happened outside the MMO like a lot of her lore. So it seems people think she has always been evil.

I’ve heard that she’s also an idiot psychopath, though they could have been talking about another character. And that’s kind of like using the Star Wars EU to justify flaws in a movie.

A good bit of lore is told completely out of game in the forms of books and short stories. So I wouldn’t be surprised if most people completely missed her big turning point when she killed herself between the seconded and third expansion and how she did it.
 
In short she impaled herself on saronite which is the hardened blood of an old god, beings know for corrupting minds.
 
I think the short story did a good job of explaining it in a way the game couldn’t without dedicating a lot of resources to a cinematic or a dialog heavy questline. while I think its unfortunate, people are going to love and hate her for what she is in game a powerful, sexy undead elf.

Maybe it’s a problem of how she’s portrayed in the game and cinematics. I mean, if what people said below is anything to go by, the writers don’t treat her any better than the fandom.

I’m not surprised by how she turned out but I do think people who think she has always been evil personified are ignoring a lot of her lore from before her first two deaths.
 
I think characters like Gul’dan, kel’thuzad, or sargeras would fit the title of evil personified much better than her, At least till the cataclysm expansion.
