i didn’t mean to offend you or cause a PNG vs JPEG debate in the comments. This drawing is lovely, and Rainbow Dash and Starlight Glimmer are my two absolute favorite ponies. so this drawing is a real treat. thanks for continuing to draw ponies!

Personally I think that 97% quality jpeg is good enough, and invisible jpeg noise at this quality level is the least problem compared to brush small mistakes everywhere. I put this this large resolution just because it look better after browser rescale it. When I export to smaller resolutions about 1000px, I use PNG format. JPEG sometimes has issues with smooth gradients, seems not to be an issue here.
 
I tried to export PNG, it took about 1 minute to export and produce 9 megabyte file, this is too much even for fast internet connections, and derpibooru can’t fallback to jpeg preview versions for huge PNGs in fullscreen browser.
 
Assume I just traded huge picture resolution to jpeg artifacts. This is very usefull and profitable trade. I can put smaller resolution file in PNG file, but this “lossless” format actually loses much more than jpeg for original resolution. It is better to upload original 4000px resolution in good quality JPEGs than downscaled 1000px PNGs with the same file size.

the only thing you should never ever do is convert a jpeg back into a png. that is almost always a terrible idea.
 
you’re right jpeg gives you more “bang for your buck” byte-for-byte. most people asking for a png are just asking for a file that hasn’t been scaled down or reduced in quality. big pngs can always be scaled down, and converted to jpeg if someone wants. with a gigabyte costing about 2-3 pennies today, storage isn’t a big deal, but 50MB is still a lot to transfer over a network, so it’s perfectly reasonable to offer imperceptibly lower quality versions for download.

Storage is not free. If I would export my art in PNG format a single file would be 50MB big, painful to display on many devices, impossible to easily share on many messengers and a whole release consisting of many versions of the pic would end up in gigabytes, while accomplishing absolutely nothing, as you can’t spot differences unless you examine individual pixels, so it’s better to export more versions or wallpapers, rather than wasting that for one pic, but I guess I just don’t care about my audience.
 
PNG is not a format for storing huge pictures and photos with tons of colors and textures. PNG works best for small pictures, where JPEG would destroy them, but once you get millions of pixels you reach the point of diminishing returns and it’s better to switch to max quality JPEG to save space, unless you specifically need a loseless compression (though if you don’t have much going on with colors, a PNG may result in a much smaller file size than JPEG actually, it was designed as a replacement for GIF after all). The point is to use the right tool for the right job.

i was exaggerating when i said you probably don’t care about your audience. i just think PNG is always the superior format, but for such lovely and colorful drawings like this with a rich background, PNG’s are nice to have!

Just care about file size. I put huge resolution jpg because it is better to spend bits on high quality large resolution JPG than smaller resolution PNG. Full resolution PNG are just slow to load on most often used internet connections. I can share PNG or source psd/clip file if you need it
