Obviously, I do hold all what was said in-show canon, with Grogar being the very first emperor of what would later be known as Equestria, father of monsters etc.
Taking place before the unification of the tribes, Grogar was a powerful archmage, self-appointed (I am on the fence if he had a tribe of his own, or a flock, so to speak), gifted enough with magic that he could tear apart reality with mere whim, toy with the line between life and death. Academic, so to speak. And very disinterested in what morality there was in taking apart creatures and “sewing” them back together into hybrid creatures. Manticores among few are his creation, as is Discord.
Though his creations, often sentient in some shape or form, didn’t exactly receive much interest from him after having been researched, and were quickly abandoned to fend for themselves (He would have called it “let them loose to conquer, pillage and devour”, they would have called it being thrown out unprepared). Nothing else mattered to Grogar than academic pursuit of magic. Many magical artifacts, creatures and even magical concepts were created or theorized by Grogar, and no magical field was off-limits to him, including necromancy.
After a considerable amount of tyranny, a group of unicorns, led by Gusty of Flutter Valley (later known as Gusty the Great) managed to hinder the ram enough to gain a form of peace in proto-Equestria. Due to this, unicorn tribe gained notoriety and status, hence why they tended to be rich by the time of the Unification of the Tribes, with Gusty’s direct descendant being Clover the Clever, hoofmaiden of Princess Platinum (though, Clover the Clever the 2nd was Star Swirl’s apprentice, not the first one).
Recluse even during his prime, perhaps he is hiding somewhere, focusing on his experiments…
You deffinitley did an amazing job. The age gives him a sort of archmage appearance
Honestly, I feel like actual Grogar wouldn’t really care to go against the Princesses or the Mane 6 as long as they don’t come knocking on his front door.
Just so happens that he was and or is very amoral about how he makes his experiments.
[Warning, extreme headcanon ahead]
Now, my headcanon did run a little further as well than written on the description, when talking with a friend about it: What if Grogar did have a flock of his own at one point, and what if the harness he wears is traditional garb? If yes, why would (or who would, within the flock) have a harness that can retain magical power? Soldier is one, but doesn’t fit Grogar as I’ve had him headcanoned.
How about a healer? That would be a reason to retain healing spells, as well as foster a keen interest in anatomy of various creatures. Of course, none of the healing was made out of the goodness of his heart, but more as a way to attain more knowledge. Eventually, he would go too far and either leave unsatisfied with what he could gain, or be banished from the tribe. Free to do as he pleased in a land that’s little more than pastures and random equines here and there.
One, a little more far-out idea was that what if pegasi and unicorns initially were result of Grogar’s tampering on Earth Ponies, and one of the reasons the three tribes didn’t exactly see eye-to-eye.
Also, I think Discord’s portrayal of Grogar was purposefully more power-hungry, because I could see him know that this hunger for power is something that the rest of the villains would reflect on and feel mutuality with. An elaborate ruse, but ruse nonetheless.
he’s not outright just malicious just very uncaring or unempathetic about anything but the pursuit of knowledge
Thank you. I wanted to give him a bit more aged appearance, but no more feeble. He’s more than strong enough. And I think it would be a crime if a sheep of all… sheep, didn’t have some proper fleece.
