Dude, I joke all the time on this site. If I was such a “shill,” I wouldn’t be criticising the brony fandom now, would I? (And before you call me a “hater,” I’ve stood up for bronies too.)

@Background Pony #58AE
I understand that, but some bronies are actually doing that.

Honestly I wish brony Channers would stop bashing SSB, and being happy “Fighting Herds” supposedly “took it’s place.” (It would’ve been included even WITH SSB guys.) I think that might just cause more drama, or make some SSB fans not wanna support the game.

Kinda like how some Sonic fans didn’t wanna support “Freedom Planet,” because people were using it to bash Sonic, or claim, “This is what a proper Sonic should be.” (Ironically, it has many things people hated the Sonic series for doing.)

@Miss Shy
Actually, 3DS & WiiU usually weren’t too bad online, or at least for me.
Truth be told, I don’t really like playing SSB online, because most online are ridiculously good, or cheap.
I mean, I’m not bad at Smash, but I swear some online folk aren’t human. lol

Basically, nearly all fighting games suck for online play because even losing a few frames (10s of milliseconds) can be the difference. Since EVOs going to a full online format due to COVID, they’d have to make one set of premiere events for the established games that have at least some stable online, but SSBU is just too janky.

But for the online side, they took up four games that have much improved online code for fighting games that use a technique called “rollback” that actually delay your input just a bit - but making it imperceptible to the player through things like animation delays and the like. Two of them are MK11 and Killer Instinct which have their own “rollback” code, but Thems’ Fightin’ Herds and Skullgirls (which the engine that TFH uses) are based on the open source GGPO “rollback” netcode which also has proven capable for online fighting. Hence why effectively TFH “kicked out” SSBU from EVO for this reason.

It’s not like it stole the spot, but it’s immensely funnier to imagine that one of the biggest crossover fighting games from one of the biggest game companies ever got BTFO by a bunch of bronies.

You can’t really say that any one game took another game’s spot, it’s more like the entire event got reshuffled. Smash seems to have been dropped entirely, but the other previously main stage titles have also been downgraded from open tournaments to exhibitions due to similarly outdated netcode design. Open online tournaments are being held for four games that weren’t main stage titles, but have rollback netcode: Mortal Kombat 11, Killer Instinct, Skullgirls, and TFH.

For context, Smash Bros Ultimate has been dropped from EVO this year, and Them’s Fightin’ Herds got in. I don’t personally know it took Smash Bros spot, but I’ve been seeing that narrative going around.

As much as love the game, that’s definitely not going to happen.

Welcome to 2008.

Smash online play has been dead from the day it launched. When Brawl came out for the Wii, the community instantly started talking about making ‘Ethernet cable adapter’-only rooms because the netcode was so bad.
