For home defense, there’s a high statistical possibility that in a home invasion, more than one intruder will be present. In this scenario, I want the most rounds possible at my disposal. Guns don’t function like they do in the movies, one shot center mass doesn’t just take a man out in a snap, so multiple rounds required on target plus the potential of multiple targets means an 8 round pistol is not ideal in a worst case scenario.
 
As such, my primary home defense solution is a 16 round double barrel pump action 12 gauge shotgun.

Never did understand the need for pistol magazines to hold over a dozen rounds.  
If you’re gonna invade another country, maybe pack some bigger iron? xD
 
Guess it depends on the mass of the plums you’re sending, but my goal would be removing oneself from the situation, not taking out every possible threat.
 
I don’t care much for modern firearms though, our best firearms manufacturers have went the same way as our automotive industry… I’ll keep running what kept my ancestors above ground before I go polymer. xD

They aren’t bad, but do generally have a rather low ammo capacity. I’d personally recommend something like a Glock 17 or 19.

I do own a 1911 and I can confirm that it’s a roughly mid-sized handgun.  
For reference, my palm is roughly about a credit cards length wide.

ParaOrdinance and Springfield do have double stack 1911s.
 
But double stack 1911s generally suck.
 
The trigger has to bow around the mag, the bulk necessitated by the fat mag gets in the way of a decent thumb safety, and screws with the mechanics of the grip safety.
 
And… single stack is definitely old-school and in a world of Glocks and USPs with 10+ round .45 cal mags, it can make you scratch your head. Then again, it’s been proven and refined over and over again for over 100 years and that has to count for something.
 
Not that it really matters, personally. I incorporate knives into Kali Eskrima for self-defense, but I digress.

M1911 is relatively slender; it’s a single stack. I don’t own a real one, but the airsoft replice I use for home target practice fits in my mits good. For reference, I’m a small man. Size of a woman.

I hear 1911 is always pretty reliable, and about the width of two fingers.

Is it? I always thoght my mother’s 1911 was rather clunky, though I haven’t seen that gun in like 4 years, so I may have a slightly inaccurate recollection of it compared to others.
