can I ask how this is unsafe she clears the chamber and removes the magazine before looking down the barrel which is how you check for damage/dirt

This conversation reminds me of when people freak out when a locked open ‘made safe’ pistol ends up having the barrel barely travel past an “unsafe” direction but are willing to put a loaded glock in their pants pointed right at their babymaker. It is a physical impossibility to only ever point a gun in a “safe” direction; that said I’m very glad everyone is being careful with their bang sticks.

Yes, the ‘more correct way’ is to drop the mag first with the slide closed then open it. However opening the slide first and then dropping the mag is also a safe practice, though you are correct there is a chance you could close the slide with the mag still in chambering another round. However in this specific example, pip opens the slide, drops mag, inspects firearm with the mag out of the gun and set aside, leading to a still safe handling.

Looking more closely now, there’s even a moment in the animation where you can clearly see through the feedpath right to her cheek - so she’s totally good to look down the barrel. Again, I was taught barrel swab so I’ll leave the more courageous inspection methods to the experts, but it makes perfect sense to me now.
 
In any case, this has inspired some good talk about gun safety.

Wouldn’t you drop mag and then open slide? That’s how I clear mine. All you do is inadvertently chamber a new round if you forget the mag was loaded and reverse the steps. One of my Navy buddies saw a guy perform a negligent discharge like that.

As a gunsmith of 14 years; I can confirm that yes, yes we do look down the barrels of firearms. The animation is actually fairly accurate if I’m doing a quick inspection of an unknown condition firearm. Slide open, drop mag. Check chamber, check down barrel for bore obstruction, next.

To be fair, she DID clear everything before doing so.

I wouldn’t look down the barrel of a gun unless that weapon has been safely disassembled.

Joshua gets a pass because he’s more bulletproof stark naked than the player is in the best armor in the game. Dude was burned alive and thrown in the Grand Canyon and just sort of walked it off. Pretty sure even if there was a negligent discharge the bullet would just bounce off his eye like Superman.

you look down the barrel of a riffle to check if it is clean only after checking there are no rounds in the chamber  
at least that is what they teach here it also VERY uncomfortable to do because it feels wrong
