For home defense, there's a high statistical possibility that in a home invasion, more than one intruder will be present. In this scenario, I want the most rounds possible at my disposal. Guns don't function like they do in the movies, one shot center mass doesn't just take a man out in a snap, so multiple rounds required on target plus the potential of multiple targets means an 8 round pistol is not ideal in a worst case scenario.
As such, my primary home defense solution is a 16 round double barrel pump action 12 gauge shotgun.
