I think there was another word that sounded similar to “thestral” used to describe bat horses before JK Rowling coined the term. Pestral sounds familiar, but I can’t remember.
I’ve heard the term “thestral” used to describe bat- sorry, “fang” pones.
But I can’t find any mention of them outside of Harry Potter. Plus, apparently thestrals are zombie horses. Not bat horses.

the answer says that “thester” is a word from old english that means that.
definitely does not apply to this fangcutie.
Hm, interesting. Dark and gloomyish, huh? Well, that at least explains why most, if not all, of bat ponies in MLP shown in gray and purple colours
according to this “thestral” means dark and gloomyish. I can’t find any uses of the word before j.k. rowling’s “harry potter” series.
Hm, i know that term, it’s oftenly used in russian segment of fandom
But i didn’t know thestrals are basically zombies
So… following this logic, bat ponies are obsessed with mangoes like zombies with human brains, huh?
