Description

Garble has a massive appetite and a second stomach for treats. Unfortunately, dragons don’t handle large quantities of cane sugar very well. Despite being able to digest almost anything — including rock and bone — dragons strangely have a hard time processing certain sugars, and their unique biology causes them to convert these sugars into ethanol in their stomachs. Don’t get too close when they have a lot of it on their breath!

Poor Joe is reconsidering serving dragons. He wonders, would that be legal?

My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

I wonder, what happens when the dragonesses form their own version of the Anti-Saloon, er, Anti-Sweet Shop League?
“CLOSE THE STORE, SUGAR NO MORE!” The crowd of roaring teen-aged dragonesses and middle-age mares outside Donut Joe’s shop chanted as they had for the past few hours. Beyond the window Donut Joe glared at them with mounting fury as they kept chasing his business away. Smolder, wearing a lovely dress (this was Canterlot after all, not some hill-pony nudist colony like Ponyville) pointed a claw at the shamefaced young male drakes as they tried to slip in the door and get their donuts and hot chocolate. “Look at you, letting yourselves be degraded by the Equestrian sugar lobby! What would your mothers and sisters think – Gar-Gar?!”
“Uh…” Garble grinned, embarrassed, a giant mug of some sugary drink in his claw. “Look, this isn’t the worst thing you’ve ever caught me doing.” He drew himself up. “Besides, I can stop whenever I want!”
Smolder flew at him and slapped the cup out of his hands. As it spilled in the street, Garble yelped and tried licking it up off the stones. Smolder clapped her claws over her face in despair. “Big brother, I used to respect you! At least this won’t be going on for much longer.”
“Yeah, why not?” Garble snorted as he looked up from the street, his claws scraping over the paving stones. Before he could say more he was pushed aside by a snorting, ears pinned pony baker.
“Ladies, and I use the woid loosely,” Joe and Smolder exchanged death glares, “I’ve been patient. I ignored your out of key singing, your beating that big drum –” He pointed.
Ballista ignored him, fangs bared in a big smile as she whipped her massive tail against a Dragonlands kettledrum.
“An’ your disparagin’ of my merchandise,” Joe pointed at signs borne by several dragonesses comparing his food to poisonous dragonsneeze, “but dis is the last straw!” He pressed against Smolder, forcing the little dragoness back away from his door by sheer weight and strength. “You are harassin’ my customers! Now either get lost or I’ll call the Guard and have them roust ya! Whadda ya say ta that?”
As he spoke a shadow appeared overhead, growing bigger all the while. Smolder and the other dragons looked up and grinned, showing their fangs. “I say ya can take it up with our national administrator.”
Joe looked up and his face went ashen under the hair. He fled with a whinny as did every other pony within half a mile as a huge, scarred old dragoness with massive horns set down. She filled the square, the other dragons took to the air, watching expectantly.
Her sour face turned on Donut Joe’s, and in a voice that rumbled like an avalanche she said, “SO, THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE PUNY PONIES PEDDLE POISON TO DRAGONS, IS IT?” She lifted one claw and set it down on the shop, crushing it into ruins. Garble and his friends barely escaped it before they were snatched by Sconce. “AND YOU. DISGRACING US ALL BEFORE THE PONIES? BAH!” She ignored their shrieks as she tossed them in the direction of the valley below Mount Epona and Canterlot. Then she turned to the rest of the dragonesses. “SEE? THAT’S HOW WE HANDLED IT IN MY DAY WHEN THOSE ROTTEN LITTLE MAMMALS GOT UPPITY. AM I DONE NOW OR DO YOU NEED ME TO STEP ON ANYTHING ELSE?”

Not sugar, but there is a scene where the lighthouse keeper and Doc Terminus’ assistant enter Elliott’s cave. After the lighthouse keeper describes Elliott as a monster and scares him, he offers the dragon a flask of alcohol, which he drinks. Then, afterwards, the alcohol reacts in Elliott’s stomach, causing him to uncontrollably belch out fire at his invaders and drive them off.
