In think for the average person out there any kind of face mask is a bit over the top, not because it wouldn’t protect them, but rather because the masks where never made to supply an entire population. Production is limited so in my opinion we should leave the masks to those who really need it, be it for their jobs or because they are especially at risk.

Sure, more is better of course and I too have P100 filters but N95 is plenty fine for most people really unless they are like really expecting to be exposed to heavy amounts of it like say a medical worker actually in a hospital filled with people infected. In that case yeah you’d probably want to cover your eyes and have a full face shield and all that but walking around like that in public is a bit silly and really the majority of the virus you’ll be exposed to in an airborne way will be from breathing it in (really the majority in general will just be from touching surfaces as like you said you have to be fairly near a sneeze/cough to have it actually in the air), so a proper N95 surgeon mask is what normal people should be investing in.

I just think at this point it’s hard to say anything for sure, even professionally estimates of its reproductive number, origin, effects or even if it could spread human to human (obviously true now) have varied, and I don’t think we’ll really be able to say things about it until analyzing it after the fact.

In the paragraph about R0, I admitted that R0 varies greatly depending on human behavior. Multiple studies have shown that it peaked at about 7 in Wuhan, and elsewhere, it has seemed to fluctuate somewhere between 2 to 4. It is vastly more transmissible than the Flu, in any case.

N95s can allow a little under 1% of particles through that are 238nm in size, while SARS-CoV-2 virions are 120nm and much smaller than the 300 nanometers that you mentioned, and while the droplet carrying them might be absorbed in the filter due to its much larger size, the dry virions may try to migrate through. I would consider P100 full-face the bare minimum protection. I have, in all seriousness, been wearing an MSA Millennium with Mestel filters while in public and spraying it down with Diversey Oxivir peroxide solution when I get home. I have respirator and SCBA training as part of my job. We regularly use P100 half-face masks for painting, sandblasting, etc.

You know believing everything you read online when no one knows anything is kinda retarded. It’s not as bad as you make it out to be at all as most of that stuff is not true.

For example claiming the basic reproductive number is 6.6 is supremely retarded. It is definitely not that high as many sources have shown. Also claiming a N95 mask is inadequate is stupid as well. Air based respirators are not like water filters where the filtering medium has to be narrower than the thing you are trying to filter. Small particles (under 1um) are captured by diffiusion rather than more traditional impaction methods, making such masks quite effective for virus-sized particles. In fact the place such filters preform the worst at is around 0.3um, which is what the N95 certification indicates (95% of 0.3um particles are blocked, everything else will be higher). Obviously singular atoms and molecules are much much smaller so for proper organic vapor filtering there’s different methods, but for relatively huge particles like viruses these are more than enough (and recommended for surgery as well as for medical personal responding to such things). Furthermore airborne virus transmission is as you’ve said an aerosol meaning they are contained within water droplets which are more like 1-10um on average, so they get filtered just fine anyways.

Acting like this is the end of the world is just inducing panic in people and is kinda pointless. It is a dangerous disease in its lethality yes but it is nothing humanity hasn’t faced before, and now in the modern age we actually have better protection against such things which is why it will be dealt with swiftly.

This whole washing your hands meme is getting old. It’s like people have completely forgotten how viruses transmit from one person to another.
deactivated20200328

Washing your hands is very important, but hand-washing alone isn’t enough to avoid contracting SARS-CoV-2 and acquiring COVID-19. The virus is airborne or droplet-borne and spreads very quickly through aerosols and/or droplets, and most people who got sick with it have picked it up from other people’s air, not from touching contaminated surfaces. The minimum safe gap between people to avoid getting sick with it is not 3 feet. It’s 15 feet. Asymptomatic people can carry it and infect others, and infected people become infectious to others within 12 to 24 hours, and remain infectious during the entire incubation period, which averages 1 week but can last almost 4 weeks. N95 half-face masks and surgical masks are insufficient. Only full-face P100 respirators or full-face 40mm NATO CBRN respirators are adequate. The virus can enter through the eyes.

It’s all in my notes:
