Yes it did originate from that but it is still only the front half of an eagle and the back half of a horse. There is no lion or big cat part in hippogriffs.
Actually a quarter eagle, a quarter big cat, and half horse, by the mythological sources. They originated as the offspring of a griffin and a horse.
