so what is happening? well this is talking about matthew’s beginnings in life, he was poor but still could have a house thanks to his mom and her friends his mom worked at a candle making aria and earns an ok amount just enough to get books but not enough to get a good home but the books part was benifical to matthew since he can learn on his own and he became a genus which will help him later in life
