Here’s the thing…
 
What if… instead of releasing the MLP movie theatrically, it gets released on Netflix as a Netflix Original film? Maybe it could have been more successful and we could get a few sequels, even if G4 ends. (But before G5 begins)
 
Hear me out, Ever since films based on TV shows (such as Rocko’s Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus) and 2D animated films such as Klaus got released on Netflix, it was successful in terms of critical reception and how many people see the film on Netflix (especially the latter), and it made me think that with CGI still dominating the mainstream theatrical industry (as well as 2D animated films such as this and the Teen Titans Go! movie underperforming at the box office), I think western 2D animation found its future in streaming, with the Nick revival films, Klaus and the fact that Viacom moved The Loud House movie to Netflix due to Mireille Soria’s hatred of 2D animation (by turning Spongebob and My Little Pony into CGI films with their new films coming out)
 
To me, it could have been a better idea than replacing Equestria Girls with this film back in 2013. Because when people say that the film should have been released in 2013, I got frustrated because how can Equestria Girls exist when the movie should get a 2013 release instead of a 2017 release (When the fandom was still big) and not EqG?
 
Also, with Netflix, it can gain a lot more money than mainstream theatrical releases because MLP became niche (in my opinion) since fans can’t accept change (with Twilicorn and Glimmer’s redemption) and some left the fanbase.
 
Sure, I used the same poster from the original Lionsgate poster (as well as the textless one), but also slapped a Netflix thing in here to see what could have happened.
 
Sorry if I kinda ranted in here, but it’s just a what if. Oh well, a man can dream.

Well, the theatrical aspect ratio is 2.35:1. And that was technically the normal and original aspect ratio. And the movie could have been in a normal aspect ratio in some channels.

technically, Full screen has been done away and a majority of movies that were shot on 2.39:1 (I call this Panavision) are stretched to 1.78 : 1 (The aspect ration we are use to today). With the movie being stretched into 1.78:1 have limited need for panning and scanning. Be lucky the MLP Movie wasn’t made into 1.33:1 otherwise we’d miss a lot of information (What happens where on the image).
God forbid how many people had to watch a movie Shot on 70mm film on VHS when a Lot was missing. Turner Classic Movies had a segment talking about how Panavision films stretched into 1.33:1 was a major con when it came to the director’s true vision of the film.

Yeah. And when the movie was aired on tv on Disney Channel, Freeform and Universal Kids, the movie was in full screen which is why the cut the left and right since the movie was normally released in widescreen. And one example is that when Pinkie says “I just can’t talk to you right now.”, the camera shifts to the left to show Twilight. And what you don’t know is that when some movies that were released in their theatrical widescreen aspect ratios aired on some tv channels, they were released in fullscreen.

The movie’s under Lionsgate jurisdiction… It’s out of Hasbro’s hands. Networks pay to broadcast the movie, hence why you saw Disney Channel and Freeform air the movie

  1. I understand. But is it not better to end while it’s ahead than continue until it rots? They’re attempt to reinvigorate the series with the School of Friendship didn’t work out well such the next season improved by downplaying it. The kind of changes to keep G4 fresh would be so drastic they might as well reboot.
     
  2. The objective evidence is it works better on a tiny screen as it left more room for the character-drivenness and nuance that made it successful, which the movie runtime and attempt to appeal to other fans like action left it too generic to be successful.
     
  3. Me neither, but it is too soon to assume that will happen.

I just don’t want G4 to be forgotten or swept under the rug outside of the fandom.
 
Sure it has a legacy thanka to the malw fans, but does MLP work better as a movie on the big screen or a show on a tiny screen? It’s a beloved property, not Bubsy.
 
Or worse, I don’t want Tara Strong to get cucked from the franchise as much as you guys do everytime people loom forward to G5. Look at Matthew Lillard.

  1. The G5 movie isn’t live action, which is what you seem to be implying by comparing it to those.
     
  2. Just because it’s not G4 doesn’t mean it will be bad. Good reboots exist. G5 could have everything that made G5 good and use the lessons from there to improve upon it. G4 surprised us with it’s quality and we’ve seen nothing of G5 to suggest it will do what you are accusing it of.
     
  3. The reason for the writing shortcomings in The Movie was due to: 1. being written midway thought the series meant it lacked much of the continuity and character development that made the series good. 2. It was confined to the limitations and cliches of the series and genre without what made the series successful despite that. A reboot would would fix that by being freed of those issues.
     
    Good writing doesn’t magically happen, if you’re certain a sequel can fix it please give specific examples as to how. When fans complained about easy redemptions, Cozy’s non-redemption caused complains as unfair given said prior redemptions. That’s an example of how the baggage of G4 held it back from improving like you say a sequel would.
     
  4. I do like G4 which is why I am not assuming those who made G4 as good as it was will produce something so inferior until I see the results. I like it such G5 being even a fraction as good will come out ahead. But I won’t be blind to that other works have surpassed G4 showing it had room for improvement and a reboot per the reasons I explained would the best way to improve unless I hear specific ways otherwise.
     
    I find it interesting a fan of G4 would doubt the abilities of those who made you a fan, who one would expect they’d think highly of, to doubt their ability to create another good work. Nor give actual examples of how the writing of G4 they speak highly of could fix things better than a reboot.

How can a reboot fix everything if it’s not going to be the same as G4?
 
Tara Strong will be cucked from the franchise as Matthew Lillard got cucked from the new Scooby-Doo movie, Most reboots aren’t people pleasers (like for example: Bakugan Battle Planet, Rise of the TMNT, LPS A World of Our Own, Thundercats Roar, etc.), and Hasbro’s reputation is so shitty when it comes to feature films with most having mixed to negative reviews and a few of them having positive ones.
 
The movie is faithful to the source material compared to Jem and the Holograms 2015, Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks because it’s not a live action movie. And MLP is a beloved property. And to fix it, it needs better writing and charscterization related to the show or something. That’s why I want a critically-redeeming sequel.
 
Do you want G4 to be forgotten or be lesser known?

I just want Hasbro to not be looked down upon by the film industry and its critics. Most of its films were critically mixed to panned. Even this film didn’t make critics change their minds on Hasbro after bashing Bayformers 5. (48% isn’t fresh!)
 
Speaking of that, didn’t Mike Vogel debunk the claims that Rainbow Roadtrip used concepts from a canceled sequel?

I would be even more gladder if this has a sequel instead of Hasbro saying: “Fuck it, let’s reboot this shit, we don’t wanna make MLP more redeemable to the mainstream public eye and instead make everyone forget Friendship Is Magic, a beloved property, existed” and just reboot it altogether, even if they meant expanding G4 to six more seasons.
 
I mean, look how much money did they make? It’s not a hit, yes. But It’s not a flop either.
 
Besides, Zim and Steven Universe got their film adaptations on TV and streaming and it did well.
