As far as I see it, humans could work if implemented as a whole species rather than as individual characters, negating the whole “tag-along character” problem Megan propagated. I think humans could work if they were put in as an extremely distant and ancient post-post-apocalyptic species totally unlike “modern” humans.
You know the kind, the ancient species with secrets abound, maybe or maybe not evil and maniacal toward the younger species, steeped in mystery and power. The kind you see often in sci-fi or other fantasy works. Reapers, Chozo, Eldritch Horrors, Goromorgs (sort of), Old Ones, Forerunners, etc.
Considering how out-of-whack the technology is in terms of advancement (wooden wagons and drawn carriages one minute, steam(?) trains and airships the next), it wouldn’t be a big stretch to assume most of it came from scavenged and modified human tech. Heck, all of the mythological creatures and weird plants and animals could be a result of human science, perhaps mixed with magic.
When it comes to ponies extensively needing human help, I honestly think it’d be the other way around in that situation. Humans would probably be ancient, frightening (carnivorous + ~ millenia of war experience + majority of tech focused on killing things = scary for any species sensitive to war/death), and horribly out-of-touch with the other species, if they were reclusive or recently reawakened from some form of scientific and/or magical stasis, kind of like Luna was.
I think humans could work if implemented, but it’d be tricky.
