Description

Erebus very evidently served as one of the main inspirations for Tirek (aside from Tirac himself): Other than common tropes like being power hungry and betraying a henchman that is no longer useful to them, both start out very weak and cloaked, trick a good character into helping them get stronger, and as they get stronger (which both do via consuming shadows/magic through their mouths) they increase in size as well. And once they are defeated, all the power they stole is stripped away from them and the two are imprisoned instead of killed. Additionally, Tirek’s horns in his later forms resemble Erebus’ spiky eyebrows.

Firefly’s Adventure is a later rerelease, it’s evident the higher ups at Hasbro were the ones that didn’t care. Not the ones who wrote the MLP bible from which the original VHS tape takes the spelling Tirac from. It’s the most common one by far, and the original to boot. The cartoon bible came before the show, same way, say, the King Kong novelization came out first and thus much of what’s in there is accepted above the movie, such as King Kong’s opponent being called a Meat-Eater and not a T. Rex or an Allosaurus.

It’s a bit aggressive of you to assume I have a serious issue (or even thinking I’m cute) for telling you that G1 wasn’t inconsistent purely based on what really is an animation error as I’ve pointed out. And yeah, from the MLP bible to the box arts, the names were written fairly consistently.

As I’ve seen on the MLP Arena forum and the G1 wiki, sometimes things are changed when ported to the UK or other places. That doesn’t mean the writers were being inconsistent, they simply had no power there.

Also, changing the name of a character in G4 retcons the character in G1? That hasn’t been the case in any of Hasbro’s properties. For Transformers, G1 Slag is still Slag to this day even if the character’s name was changed in Animated since slag is a derogatory term in the UK. That’s one of the potential reasons as to why Applejack was separated into two words, because of the beverage of the same name.

@zidders

Tirek was made by fans long before even FiM came out (I remember because I was actually on the internet knowing of MLP long before Friendship is Magic premiered) and since G4 writers didn’t care about research, they didn’t use the correct name, and simply canonized the fanmade term, something Hasbro is known for doing.

And even if that’s the “official” name now::

  1. They could still correct themselves as they’ve done with other properties (Transformers being the most major one where many mistakes have been made and have been corrected over time)

  2. They’re not gonna go back and use stuff from G1 since G4 was so popular and G1 isn’t really talked about anymore, so Tirac is still valid for the original character.

    It’s a new continuity each time so what they say about a new character with an old character’s name doesn’t immediately erase the old character. I’ve seen this happen to only a few franchises, and MLP isn’t gonna be one of them.

@DarkCarioca
Tirek isn’t fan-made. It’s entirely canon and used throughout Friendship Is Magic. Especially in the last season. That makes it official since latest product cycle > whatever they did in the 80’s. Hasbro doesn’t care about the 80’s. Hasbro cares about profits now. Since all merch featuring him post-2010 is predominantly spelled ‘Tirek’ that’s what it is.

And G1 was hella inconsistent. Hasbro didn’t care about dotting T’s and crossing i’s when it came to consistency then. Tirimsil has you on all points.

I didn’t say “the fans spell Tirek any of four different ways”. All four are printed in official material. “Tearak”, for instance, is printed on the Firefly’s Adventure special release of Rescue at Midnight Castle. If “Tirac” is oh-so-official, why would the re-release alter it, when “Tirac” was already present? It’s almost like they never made up their minds or something.

It’s cute you think canon works on a seniority system, but if anything, canon is latest-first; that’s why it’s called retroactive canon (retcon.) Therefore, “Tirek” is the correct spelling because that is the official interpretation of G1 which founded the G4 character and current trademark.

If you honestly think “G1 wasn’t inconsistent”, right after I pointed out three different spellings of (K)night( )shade’s name across the same product, you have a serious issue. I don’t think there is a single non-human character whose name was printed consistently. Characters with two-word names - like Knightshade! - were prone to sometimes having spaces and sometimes not, even “Apple Jack”. There is also a UK music disc (fan-dubbed “Seven Songs and a Story”) that spells a song’s name the one way, but then spells it slightly differently in the title of its reprise, on the same packaging.

That is because Hasbro did not give a damn. Hasbro was very slow to codify any of the TV content or expanded merchandise as they did not expect it to take off or stick around. Tirac / Tearak / Tirek / Tirrek is merely one of the most visible casualties of this negligence.

Knight Star and Discord were not “good characters” in these episodes.
They were, however, highly parallel in that their cooperation with the villain was for selfish reasons: Knight Star was a rocker who Erebus promised fame and fortune, while Discord was convinced that the obligations of friendship were contrary to his unrestrained nature as a chaos spirit.
I would also like to point out that G1 was horribly inconsistent and there are four known spellings for Tirek’s name.
  • Tirek
  • Tirac
  • Tirrac
  • Tearek
Chances are the people writing this name only heard it vocally and then just had to guess how to spell it.

Ehem.

If the cartoon bible and original VHS covers say it’s Tirac, it’s Tirac. The others pulled the alternate spellings out of somewhere and Tirek is entirely fanmade.

Other than that? No, G1 wasn’t inconsistent aside from the animation due to the below average budget the show was given.

Not to my knowledge; most likely I typed Star on muscle memory and didn’t notice to correct it. Maybe Knight Star or Night Star is a phrase from elsewhere that I spoonered over??

Related, his name is also spelled three different ways:

  • Night Shade and the Shadowettes (poster)
  • Knight Shade (trailer door)
  • Knightshade (back of box)

    But no, “Knight Star” is just me juggling 50 different pieces of information and dropping one of them.

Where did you get the name knight star…the name was knight shade.
Not trying to criticize or correct you…just curious if there was some comic or fanfic I haven’t read yet that features the character by a different name

i wonder what they would have done with the cloud guy

They could’ve done Twilight’s Kingdom without having to put Erebus in Tirac’s body. After all, Erebus can control the weather and shoot lightning so the battle could’ve still been there except it would’ve had a lot more than just beam struggles, but it probably would’ve been a lot harder to animate.
