It would be kinda cool to see the Knuckles, and Death Egg saga from the original trilogy mixed in, and mix some modernized elements (and maybe characters) too.
 
Apparently, the movie’s doing so well, they already are planning a sequel.
 
Also, is it me, or is it odd there’s like… zero merchandise based on the movie. I’d at least like to get a movie poster.

Yeah I rather not. That would make too many or too much characters. Besides, I think Paramount and SEGA wanted to focus on the movies being based on the original old video game series. Like Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I saw the movie on Feb 18. It was so awesome! And seeing Tails in the movie’s post-credit scene got me hyped! Plus, my god he looks freaking adorable as I thought! All that fluffy fur is just what I imagined from that little guy. He’s like a best buddy, not only to Sonic, but to all of us too!

Wasn’t accusing you of that, but that’s arguable, considering kids are familiar with some of the 3D games like “Forces.” Not to mention, the official mobile games like “Sonic Dash.” Some kids even hate old 2D games.
 
I was actually under the impression the 3D Mario games were more popular frankly. In fact, the NewSMB series has been getting hate lately for them being “too similar,” or “too sequelized like Call of Duty.” (Which is actually kinda ironic, because only one NewSMB game comes out for every new system, and frankly Switch didn’t even get a new one.)  
Further irony, back in the GameboyAdvance days, fans were begging for a brand new Mario sidescroller, instead of all the “Super Mario Advance” remakes. (Before NewSMB for DS came out, there wasn’t a brand new Mario sidescroller platformer sense “Super Mario Land 2” for Gameboy.)

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those classic fanbrats who hates the 3D Sonic games, I’m just saying that I think the writers are only going to stick with using characters & elements from the classic 2D Sonic games for future sequels, considering again, the classic games are much more popular & more well known than the 3D Sonic games are.
 
In fact I think the same thing is going to happen with Nintendo & Illumination’s upcoming Mario Bros. Movie as well, with how that film is only going to use characters & elements from the NSMB games & not from the 3D Mario games, because just like the classic 2D Sonic games, the NSMB games are more popular & more well known than the 3D Mario games are. When little kids & parents hear the name “Mario,” they immediately think of the NSMB games & not so much 64, Sunshine, the Galaxy games & Odyssey. I could be wrong by all this, it’s just a feeling that I’m getting.

True, some fans thought “TMNT2: Out of the Shadows” went overboard on the classic characters. It had so many, that some of them hardly got any focus. (Like Splinter & Karai, whom hardly did anything in it.) Though, frankly I thought that movie was much better then the previous 2014 one. (And Wil Arnett was a perfect Vernon Fenwick.)

Well the amount of characters does work differently in a film series then it does in games so they should be careful about it what characters they use and how

Shame, some are still divided on Sonic’s extended cast. Heck, some think “Sonic Mania” has “too many characters.” …
 
Of course, nobody complained that “Super Mario 3D World,” and “New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe” have 5 playable characters. (7 if you count Blue Toad & Peachette as separate from their counterparts.) Heck, some complained Luigi isn’t playable in “Super Mario Odyssey.”

It’s too soon to say, as even modern characters like Shadow, Rouge, Silver, Cream, Omega, and even Big have their fans too.  
They’ll probably save the more modern ones for a third movie.
 
In fact, actually similar to the “Only Sonoc 1,2,&3 are guud!” Classic purist crowd, I am seeing a small increase in fans who prefer the modern era, or early 3D era of Sonic, or whom hate the classic games. (Probably out of retaliation for the hate the 3D games get.)  
There’s also still many demanding a “Sonic Adventure 3” game, I see more demand for that then for a “Sonic Mania 2.”  
(Personally, I’d be happy just getting remakes of SA 1&2.)

I have a feeling they’ll just stick with using the classic era characters for the later sequels, (Ex: just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Eggman, Metal Sonic & maybe Amy) judging by how super popular & well received the classic 2D games are compared to the 3D Sonic games, especially with Mania’s recent popularity & success.
