Huh, I thought the Ultramarines were considered “The Mario” of all the chapters due to the fact that they seem to be the most balanced in terms of stats, at least that’s what I’ve always figured.

Space marine chapters are quite varied, actually. There are definitely the snooty chapters, some of which are humble and others self-righteous pricks. Murder-hobo chapters tend to get excommunicated or are riding the line because I can’t really think of any good examples on the Imperium’s side. The Lamenters are a special case because they try to do everything right (in 40k standards) despite having the worst luck in the galaxy, and it’s all owing to them being part of the “Cursed Founding.”

I got into the tabletop this summer with my roommate. It is expensive, but it is fun. I got into the 40k lore after learning how cool it was without being too silly (unless you like space Orks). I ended up playing the Tyranids on the tabletop because I loved their lore most of all. OM NOM NOM!
 
From what I understand, the Ultramarines get hate because they became a Mary Sue space marine chapter thanks to Matt Ward and are now Games Workshop’s star chapter and faction. They tend to get all of the attention from GW on the tabletop, along with space marines in general, while other factions tend to get neglected, especially xenos factions (though the Necrons got some love recently). grumbles in Tyranid

To be fair, I’ve never played table top (too expensive for me) but ironically enough the game that got me into Warhammer in general was the videogame 40k Inquisitor: Matyr. After playing that game for a bit, I wanted to learn more about 40k. Like how the Grey Knights are basically an entire army of Doomguys…with psychic powers, or how the Blood Angels seem like nobility until they get the Red Thirst or the Black Rage. I just like how everything is just over the top and beligirent at the same time all the while keeping it in a universe where it makes sense that the term ooverkill isn’t enough kill. I mean, look at the Necrons and the Tyranids, you’d be insane not to drop a flaming church from orbit on top of those guys.
 
I know a little about 40k but not a whole lot I’m afraid.
 
But one thing I don’t get is, why do Ultramarines get so much hate? I mean I get the Smurf refrence but still…?

Oh yeah, totally. That’s why my dad plays them.  
I like them because they have a mix of a clean and a dirty look.

I confused the Marines Malevolent with the Mortifactors. Oops. The MM are still giant assholes with no regard for casualties, though. It’s also not known who the MM succeed from.

Lamenters were sent to the Death Watch same as any other Chapter, they weren’t exempt from that even with their “cursed” reputation.
 
Deathwatch is…unique like that.
 
After all, it’s the one place you’ll find a Marines Malevolent fighting alongside a Salamander with only minor grumbling.

Oh, a Lamenter. Just realized that.

Starlight: For those who aren’t familiar with the Space Marines of Warmace 30k, just imagine if Bulk Biceps ate Big the Cat and then covered themselves in an H1 Hummer. We’re talking 2 hearts the size of turkeys, 4 lungs, 6 stomachs! Night vision! We’re talking 10 feet tall, 3 ton, monsters.
