Dude, violence existed centuries, and eons before guns were invented, but let’s not get into that plz.

1. Most gun deaths are suicides.  
2. Gun homicides per capita have been steady or falling for decades. Most likely the media noticed a ratings increase when reporting the death spike in the 90s and have been using selective reporting since then.  
3. Most countries considered successful cases of gun control are islands (harder to smuggle things in) or have a colder climate (less viable to live on the streets). Good for them, but don’t expect it to work for everyone.  
4. Many of the mass shootings hyped up by the media involved gun purchases that were already illegal. Criminals are not going to give up their guns.  
5. Violence is still an option. Even if you could take guns from all criminals and prevent them from getting new ones, they can easily kill people with other weapons and civilians would be less able to defend themselves.  
6. The US government holds that police are not obligated to protect people. See: Town of Castle Rock v Gonzales. Even if they had to, response time is abysmal.  
7. Historically, disarming the populace removes a huge incentive against forcing through laws that benefit an oligarchy at everyone else’s expense.  
   You asked why, there are some reasons for you. If you’re worried about preventable deaths, you can campaign to make tobacco and high sugar foods illegal. If you fear dying to a gun more than any other violent death, there are countries willing to indulge you.
