Fair point. There’s nothing that says it couldn’t be an uncle on his mom’s side (or dad’s). Perhaps draft-size unicorns are unusually likely to go into military service, much like draft earth ponies work farms. I HC that the magical potential of a unicorn is related to its body size, while training, talent, and genetics matter for turning the potential into magical horsepower and the usefulness of the magic. It is canonical that Twilight’s family has usually strong spellcasting power, so it all fits nicely.
Probably not, but the red uniform Shining wore to his wedding was stated to be from his favorite uncle.
And definitely looks military oriented.
Is it ever implied that Night Light was a retired royal guard? It’s not an unbelievable claim, but I don’t remember that being pointed out in the show.
Being a military background family probably helps in Shining’s case.
AJ is from a proud family of draft horses. XXL ponies are simply better at operating farm equipment.
I’m surprised that Twi wasn’t more consistently drawn as the second-tallest prior to S9E26. Her brother is roughly Big Mac’s size, so she probably has some drafty genes in her. Even if her parents were both normal-size, she probably has some drafts among her grandparents.
