The one issue I can see is why didn’t Celestia admit this after it worked out? My headcanon is Celestia’s fatal flaw is her need to be perfect shown in “A Royal Problem” prevents her from admitting to doing morally questionable things, or owning up to and learning from their mistakes. That’s why fans bash her, she acts and is treated in-work too perfect to ring true to us.

Boy, I sure love it when creators retcon things years after they were no longer involved with the thing they created.

If Twilight failed, Celestia would basically turn Equestria into the Nightmare Moon dimension from S5 finale alternate future. No wonder she retired just few years after Twilight became an ALicorn. She’s the worst ruler ever. She even refused to become the Queen and sticked to Princess to show how immature and weak she is. Twilight became Queen of Equestria right after coronation.

Maybe the whole reason why she freed Discord was so that he could gather the most diabolical villains to test Twilight Sparkle at her worse.
