ever walk through a jet dryer (like the types for car washes) with 2 layers of cotton clothes and a rubber rain suit, its pretty awesome. until your hard hat flies off and your safety glasses attached to it and your neck strangle you.

Gem size doesn’t necessarily impart gem cost. Clarity, cut, finish, type of stone, these can all heavily influence the monetary value.
 
A rough, baseball sized hunk of quartz won’t net you even a third of what a clean, kumquat-sized diamond piece will.

Equestrias economy must be a mess.  
If a tiny gem split can buy a industrial strength pet dryer, then how much is a bigger gem worth?  
Wouldn’t Spike be able to buy the whole train with the gem that he gave for the tickets?  
And the big gem that Fluttershy gave him must be enough to feed her animals for a while.
