Except that we later learn that they were friends. Also, the fact that they approached Twilight indicated they knew her pretty well. She had just been distancing herself from them.

Okay, but I think they were actually talking about the group of friends that Twiley was shown to have had while at Celestia’s academy - Moondancer, Minuette, Lemon Hearts, and Twinkleshine? The ones she kept blowing off randomly to read an interesting book she’d found in the library? :)

If you mean the characters who were in a scene in the first couple of minutes of the first episode they struck me as people who were friendly but weren’t actually her friends because she wouldn’t spend time with them.
Some kids just develop their personalities on their own. And Twilight did have friends, she just kept distancing herself from them as she got caught up in her studies.
