It is unclear when, exactly, Discord came into existence. Some say that his kind, the draconequus, had almost up and died out after facing the King and Queen, and he was sent to hide in safety. Others think that perhaps, he was conjuredby the universe one day as an opposing force to the harmony and balance. As for how Discord actually came to be: He has no idea. I mean, do you remember the day you were born? No? Didn’t think so.
 
Since he had the power to unravel the world in his claws, Discord never felt the need to “team-up” or befriend anybody. All those other villains could go ahead and run amok, trying to gain control over Equestria. Discord could easily usurp them. He watched idily as The Smooze, Grogar, the Sirens, Tirek, King Sombra, and many others fought and lost against the Two Sisters and their mentor, Starswirl the Bearded.
 
Then on a bright summer’s day, while Equestria was enjoying some long-deserved peace and quiet…He snapped his claws and turned the world upside-down. Those silly ponies and their magic couldn’t make a dent in Discord, and he could change a spell with the flick of a hand to become something random and harmless. The frightened ponies bowed their heads and let him rule, fearful of his power.
 
And naturally they feared him - he was a creature of unknown species and origin, a mish-mash of various animals all squished into one asymmetrical being that towered over them. His power rivaled that of the Two Sisters, and in the opposite direction. Instead of spreading harmony and peace, he sowed chaos and unhappiness. Not that it made Discord unhappy at all, just that having their houses float away made a few ponies upset.
 
Of course, then the Sisters figured out his weakness: he was a being of chaos after all, if they used the Elements of Harmony on him his powers would be neutralized! Thus, he was imprisoned in stone for many years. As an immortal being, getting imprisoned in stone wasn’t so much a death sentence as it was widly inconvenient. Thankfully, all he needed to do was play the long game.
 
 
Discord and Fluttershy are indeed an odd couple - but perhaps that is why they get along so well. Flutters is willing to call him out whenever Discord fucks up, and Discord genuinely enjoys Fluttershy’s company. All the wonderful tea-time conversation you can get, plus an adorable companion, and all he has to do is not make other people miserable with his powers? Easy-peasy.
 
…Well, at least it got easier for him as time went on. Thankfully, Treehugger didn’t hold a grudge.
 
 
Following his breakout and slow redemption via Fluttershy, Discord is much more well-adjusted in his interactions with others. He gets along well with all of the Mane 6, but gets along well with Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Twilight especially. He’s found a place in Equestria as a kooky old trickster god, with no real malice or desire to hurt others anymore. Whenever he does feel like reliving the past, its usually through some confusing but otherwise harmless pranks. Pinkie and Dash will often help him out with these - he’s got plenty of creative ideas!
 
Despite what many ponies assumed, Discord and Celestia actually didn’t have much of a history before his imprisonment. But, Celestia’s parents, the King and Queen, did often talk about the draconequui species. Looking back on these conversations, Celestia did realize that Discord’s kind were unjustly pursued, and wanted to rectify that. Perhaps if someone showed Discord a little kindess and patience, his behavior could change…
