Think about it, people. If you could go back to the past AND change things, that would mean that you could go back to Diamond Tiara’s past and slap Spoiled Rich around even before we were introduced to her, for Diamond Tiara’s sake that is. Maybe she could have been freed early on, OR she’d just get traumatized after seeing some ape-like monster slapping her mother around, though, she’d secretly be enjoying the show.

Sure you can. Even with the severely limited version of time travel where you can’t change something because “it already happened”, all you have to do is make sure your past self still thinks it happens. A lot of characters in tv shows aren’t very imaginative when it comes to this subject but if they saved someone’s life (for example) in a way that their past self thinks they died then everything will just be fine.

You can’t travel to the past to change something.  
Because if you did there would be no need to travel back in time in the first place.
 
(The grandparents paradox-paradox, if I travel back in time and kill my grandmother I would never have been born, but because I was never born I would also never been able to kill my grandmother.)
